Planting the Future
“The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

The City of Hope Outreach has expanded the community garden at our location in Oakwood and continues to be cared for by the community members. The garden is an integral part of our Nutrition and Small Market program and provides nutritious fruits and vegetables free to the community.
Our after school program, CoHO Academy, provides students with a classroom gardening experience, including weekly instruction as part of the academy's STEM, Nutrition, and Personal Development curriculum. Interested students can enroll for academy here.

Earth Day Community Events
On April 22nd, 2024, Nutrition Director Lana Thurman established CoHO's first annual Earth Day Event. During the event, CoHO academy students and volunteers from Interfaith Power and Light planted an orchard of 17 native trees, including persimmon, pawpaw, fig, mulberry, pecan, and redbud trees. This orchard provides fresh fruit for the Hope Village community, aligning with CoHO Nutrition's initiatives of tackling food insecurity and promoting environmental conservation.

As featured in the Log Cabin Democrat, the 2024 Earth Day Event also included an exciting announcement: CoHO is officially recognized by the National Wildlife Federation as a Certified Wildlife Habitat® through its Garden for Wildlife™ movement. The National Wildlife Federation is America's largest wildlife conservation organization, dedicated to protecting wildlife and their habitats through education, advocacy, and community engagement.  This certification signifies CoHO's dedication to creating a biodiverse ecosystem that supports native wildlife species. Every Certified Wildlife Habitat garden provides natural sources of food, water, cover and places to raise young and is maintained in a sustainable way that incorporates native plants, conserves water and doesn’t rely on pesticides.

"The Earth Day Tree Planting Ceremony and Certified Wildlife Habitat Unveiling are significant milestones for CoHO and our community," said Lana Thurman. "It's a testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship and biodiversity conservation. We invite everyone to join us in this celebration of Earth Day and our collective efforts towards a sustainable future."
